i had to do a barrier in between a conservatory and lylandie was 2m deep .300mm width and

4m long that was centre off the tree but size would be for the type of tree

Many factors to consider, site soil conditions would be so variable as to be impossible to give general species depth tables. What is the purpose of the barrier? To prevent incremental root growth damage/lifting?

It has to be installed to a depth specified by a tree consultant who has prof indemnity insurance. It then has to be installed according to manufacturers recommendations.

There is a tree sundry supply company out there with a very high profile that sells root barrier at 300,600,1000 & 2000mm. I have had a real argument with their salesman over a rootbarrier at any of these depths. In my view it cannot work and they are misleading clients.

Amazingly they counter saying that the roots stay at that depth!! & that a barrier does not have to be a complete barrier, pointing out that a fence with gate is a barrier, even if the gate can be opened (I kid you not).

I am often asked to install root barrier as supplied by the company as they have a very good profile with specifiers who specify the whole planting package (rooting areas, aeration/irrigation tubes, grilles and guards). I have to point out to clients that the root barrier is not going to work in my opinion and is better described as a root deflector and I will have no liability if I install it.
