Just wondering, a fairly old but in good condition 046, no chain brake (but just for home fun so not a big issue) and a 24" bar. Could a chain brake be retrofitted easily on these saws?

How much is reasonable? There's a guy near me selling one, and he'd like £150 for it. Seems reasonable to me?

Do you mean 048?

I would see £150 as a bit high - the big old saws hold their value for milling and some of the rarer models (e.g. 050) are collectable, but this doesn't quite fit in either bracket so I would have thought more like half that price. Maybe add a little bit if it's known to be good and allowing for not having to courier it (£7.50), so say up to about £100 but that would be higher than I would go. For context, I bought my 051 for £30.

Depends how much you like it really.

Sorry Alec, that is no 048 in the pic, they look like larger 038s!

£150 is OK for a nice condition all working older saw with a decent bar and chain.

Bargains are always possible out there though:thumbup:

Sorry, meant 045 not 048.

It's got the old logo on, so mid-70s or earlier, but it's not an 041 or 051 as the plug isn't in the back handle.

Still reckon the price is a bit on the high side.

It's probabley an 045 which by the way had two different sized pistons ,44 mm and 48mm depending .They aren't praticularly fast although with the horizontal design they have a lot of lugging power .

Odd design ,the intake and exhaust are on the same side of the cylinder plus it uses an internal coil inside the flywheel .

I've seen a few and operated a few but never turned a wrench on one .They're more a collecters item I think .

My mistake on the previous post .I was thinking one thing and doing another I mistakenly transfered my thoughts to the 041 instead of the 045 . Disregard .
