Hey guys, Its my first post here, been looking around for a few days and its a very nice forum you have here!

 

So i bought this Sthil 010 AV as a fixer upper just for cutting up a few driftwood logs,

 

but the engine won't draw any petrol into the cylinder,

plugs are fine, carb and main jet are clear, fuel is brand new, tubes to carb are unobstructed I've even tried without a fuel filter and it still won't go!

 

If i pour a few drops of petrol down into the carb it starts first time and runs for a few seconds though...Somebody please help!

Is the plug getting wet? Suspicously sounds like a compression problem to me.

Nope, the plug is completely dry.

Lets start from the begining, where did the saw come from? why was is taken as a fixer upper? What is the compression like? easy compression test is if you hold the saw by the starter handle in mid air, the saw should be held on the rope and not unwind, if it unwinds and drops to the floor its got bad copression.

The saw came from a my dads elderly friends garage sale.. he has dementia so i have no idea when it last ran,

it was bought as a fixer upper because it was cheap and wouldn't start at the time.

 

while I'm pulling the starter cord it does feel like the compression is normal.. I'm by no means an expert but it feels right and doesn't make any strange noises.

Try lifting the metering arm in the carb a little, it is probably that! Jus do it by 0.5mm.

So i stripped the carb down this morning, i couldn't find the 'metering arm' or any type of float adjustment.. gave it a clean out with petrol..again!

 

and still won't start! the carb is this one if it helps anybody..

The metering arm is the actuator that lifts the needle and sits directly over the diaphragm, there are set limits these should be set to but have had a number of machines that have not started due to the metering arm being set a little high in to the carb body.

Doesn't start when you pull it, but starts when you pour petrol into it - so compression is good, sparks are good. If it has been sitting for a while, check the fuel pump membrane, it is probably stiff as a board and not pumping. Have you put a new carb kit on? (And if you did, did you get everything in the right order - I have screwed this up several times and ended up with a saw that did not pump.).

 

Very much points to a fuel problem.

 

I had one that would never start on the cord, needed a bit of fuel in the carb. Once it was warm it ran and started perfectly. The problem was the choke flap which had distorted and was not sealing.
