After logging this afternoon it only seems to smoke on hard wood, I'll give the chain a proper sharpening session tomorrow and hope that resolves it.

Is it bogging out when smoking (is the chain slowing up / stopping)

Sorry to ask a dumbass question but sometimes simple is the way forward - also even though it is smoking is it still cuttiong as quickly and efficeintly as it should?

A saw has to be fairly blunt to start smoking, plus you will definitely know its blunt if it's that bad!

I would go for the pinched bar suggestion or a nose sprocket about to give up the ghost.

Ah - one last suggestion, is your chain about 2/3 life, if it is then have you taken down your depth gauges to accomodate the wear in the chain, it is very possible that you are grinding your way through the cut with the rakers/depth gauges.

Are you getting good chips out of the saw - around 3-4mm square?

Easy to keep sharpening the cutters and forget the rakers/depth gauges.

The chain is relatively new, ive only needed to sharpen it a couple of times. I've got a spare chain (brand new) that I'm going to stick on and do some logging with, process of elimination...

Saw seems to be fine with cutting even when smoking, doesn't slow down, just bloody smells!

Rather embarrassingly, the chain is quite blunt, better improve my sharpening skills and sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the advice anyway guys

Told ya :001_tt2:

It's always worth having a good chain as back up, then you can do a quick swap if necessary and sharpen at you leisure.
