milling confrence?

This is a great idea. You buy a mill and if your lucky get a couple of hours tuition on it. Then you are on your own with only YouTube to help.

The site would need to be central, have plenty of logs and if over 2 days then camping next to the mill. A shower would also be nice.

One of the big estates may be ideal.

However I may struggle to get there as my wife is very poorly, having chemotherapy at the moment. She is having a very tough time.

Really sorry to hear that John - I hope the treatment is effective and she makes a full recovery.

The milling idea is a great one but I'm not going to be able to do anything this year.... But certainly something to think about for the future. Would be good to see all the various types of mill in action i.e. swingmill, bandsaw and chainsaw as well as a static as well as looking at how to stick and dry timber etc.

,,nothing set in stone yet john, just gauging the interest, was thinking about practical sessions of various mills, tips from veterans, possible slide show in evening or a talk,,,camping, and maybe a little build challenge,,,say 4hrs to mill and make a subject of whatever, bench, table,,,etc,,,

on a more serious note, my thoughts are with you and your wife !all the best

Sounds like a very good idea!

I bought some timber from a mill in Northamptonshire (nice and central) not long back. The chap there has been milling for nearly 50 years. Lovely bloke and might be worth 'hiring' for the day to pick his brain. In addition to that, it's the most wonderful sawmill you have seen in your entire life with thousands of tons of butts at any one time.
