University advice, i need some opinions!

Hi all,

Ive been at university now for almost 1 year, studying Forestry and Woodland Management, the course runs for 3 years. I love tree sugery and forestry and thought would be a good idea to get a university degree under my belt along with my college qualifications.

However, i havent enjoyed any of my first year, struggle with all the work and have faild a few assignments. i much prefer just being at home and earing money instead of building up all this debt for a degree i may not enjoy or feel it being worthwhile. Im thinking of quitting if i complete this first year or just stuggle through 2 more years which i dont like the sound of.

Any advice on this matter would help me out alot! cheers :001_smile:

My advise to you would be that if your not enjoying it you wont do well in that degree and will be a wast of money. If you want to work as a tree surgeon or in forestry get your tickets and go work for someone to gain experience. Or even better find someone to work for that will put you through the cs's(this might be difficult though unless you pledge you future to them for a few years) there are plenty of diplomas and other courses you could do at the same time as working without getting into dept once you have a feel for the game. Then you can relate what your learning to your experience and you will know that its exactly what you want to do.

Best of luck whatever you decide:thumbup1:

cheers for the advice. i already have my 2 years of college and a few years of tree surgeon work with several companys in which i still work for in my free time. but i do agree that if i dont enjoy the degree there is no need to try force myself through it as im not one to end up working in an office!

I finished a degree last year, it was a full time degree but just two days a week so I could work at the same time although didnt have a life! The work load increased each year plus a double dissertation so some people went part time. Do you have this option for the last two then you work and get a degree which would be good to have under your belt for the future? Maybe with less assignments you might enjoy it?

Hello.

I hated my first term at uni and wanted to quit but after then it was great. It opened many doors for me. What about doing it part time it will take longer but give you more time to work. Also just because a degree might not be right for you now doesn't mean that in a few years time you can't do it.

wow nice one, would you say that with the degree you now have a better choice of jobs? i stuggle to see the types of jobs that become avalible, in my head the only jobs it opens up are office jobs?

It does open a lot of doors. Yea the jobs it opens up are more office based but increasingly head forester/head woodsman which are say 90% practical would like a degree.
