Bleeding Hornbeam

Hi, I did a reduction on a hornbeam a couple of weeks ago and its bleeding quite a lot. Will it be ok? I did a Walnut in Jan and that leaked all over the drive!!! What reassurance can I offer the customer.

I have always done walnut mid to late summer and no probs .. Can't comment on the hornbeam , sorry .

Most likely it will be ok, try to leave it a few years before any more pruning, it may have depleted its reserves.

As an aside someone once told me if you press your ear against a hornbeam at the right time of year you can hear the sap moving. Don't know if there's any truth in it though!

As said, the best time to do Walnuts is high summer. We have two to do but won't be doing them until June/July time. Not sure on the Hornbeam though.

i had a play with a horn beam at mum and dad's in october and it's also just started pissing sap everywhere it looks healthy enough otherwise tho'
