Pholiota squarrosa on Catalpa bignonoides

Yep, the title says it all, has anyone any info. on the pathogenicity of pholiota on Catalpa?

I would think it is a capable rotter of Catalpa, but no personal experience so, just assumptions based on its capacity on lime and other broadleaf genera

Yes I would imagine Catalpa sp. would have a fairly weak response.Just guesswork mind.

I agree, because Catalpa is associated with cosmopolitan generalistic endomycorrhizal microfungi, that also associate with grasses and herbs and are unable to provide powerful tree root defense systems.

What is the significance of the herbaceous layer in respect to endomycorrhizal fungi? Isthis to do with Pholiota squarrosa acting as a secondary pathogen on an already weakened defence system?

what he means is that catalpa rely on endo mycorhizal as apposed to the more evolved ecto (macrofungi) myco which perform long evolved and specific defence actions against pathogens, or often at the very least offer enough health benifits to enable the tree to compensate for much longer than would be the case otherwise.

Correct if you add that on top of this Catalpa has to compete for resources provided by the endomycorrhizal symbionts with the grasses and herbs too and because it's an exotic species it doesn't effectively keep them out of its territory by producing a leaf and litter layer covering the soil.
