I remember an Old Norse tale (?) saying that you must ask permission from the Elder Queen before cuttong or breaking elder otherwise bad things will happen.

Dont know how she is meant to give permission so I just apologise first:biggrin:

Burns well when dry too.

And whilst on, the old idea of putting elder in the roof space of your house to keep witches away has very sensible reasoning behind it. For witches read woodworm. Elder is one of the first woods to be attacked by woodworm so you would put it in yr attic and replace it with a fresh bit every year. Thus keeping yr hovel woodworm free:confused1:

For witches read woodworm.:

Ah yes my favourite Shakespeare scene......the three woodworm round the cauldron " fire burn and cauldron bubble. Hubble bubble toil and trouble. when shall we three meet again, in a lump of elder in someones attic"

All I know is I helped a couple of mates take a largeish one out about 4 years ago.

It made us all as sick as dogs. Mrs Googled it and found out it contains a "natural" form of Arsenic and it is easily absorbed in the spray (?) when sawn.

Burnt alright. Always wear gloves when handling logs so I've had no further problems.

Should mention that one is now no longer with us. That was Cancer, surely not related!!!

Sorry,

Bob

If Tony Blair was still in power we would all live forever. Not so sure with these ruthless tories at the helm. We'll probably have to go back to natural life expectancy.
