naive question...

Hi all,

Recently put a wood burner in our house which frankly is the best thing DIY thing I’ve ever done. Also bought a small saw & ppe and so far have been managing to acquire bits of wood here and there to keep it well fed.

Question is, is it usual for arb companies to sell everything that’s cut as logs, or is green timber sometimes just waste?

Appreciate that selling firewood is a living for lots of people on here, however I dont suppose I’m alone in thinking I could offer a home to small quantities of unprocessed new cut wood that might otherwise get tipped?

No, you're right, the odd one will class all arisings as waste, some just cut. You just need to find someone in your area who does that and, most importantly, be able to clear it when they say so, you'll need to do it as part of their work, or pay them to deliver it to you.

You'll then need to season it, you don't want to clog up your nice new flue or get nothing but smoke for your efforts... unless you're fortunate enough to have found something which burns green, like ash.

I guess after this site, your local press adverts would be a good place to start looking.

And your location will help...

make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted with the stove also best if you can get it signed off either by building inspector or hetas fitter else the house insurance is invalid

Just approach some lads you see working. If they know you'll take odd bits from local jobs then it can be quite handy to get rid of stuff that way. Make sure you see them right with a drink and you'll get all you need.

We get rid of pretty well all of our wood, mind you more and more of our clients want it left onsite.

Typically, if we can find a tipsite local to a job it's cheaper to drop it off than cart it back to the yard, (where we have no space anyway), or drop it at site local to our yard. PM me your address or email the website and when we do work over that end of the world you might be on the list to get some. We have a datbase of folk willing to take wood and chip.
