i dont know why....thats best left to a rope technician, all i know is the regate binds for me, where the double braid runs smooth as you like. out of all the cords ive used, the marlow self tends most readily

ok, well as i ahve some regate to hand i'll be using that, i may take the marlow braid out and see how it works.

what function do the braids and wraps do and which is best to alter

mate it literally is a case of trying every combination you can....you will never settle for one set up IMO. you may have it perfect one day, then go try it the next with a new bit of cord and for some reason its just not quite the same! thats IMO one of the nice things about the v.t, its a constant challenge.

Start with a basic 4-2, get used to climbing with the new technique before you started tweaking it too much

I thought the braids created most of the friction by the way they 'bend' the rope?

when you compress the braids with the wrapped portion, the friction is transferred to the wraps, which have less friction and thus allow you to descend

I like the yale Beeline cord, but im using some proclimber stuff at the moment that is tennex on the inside and something else on the outside, I found it in the sac magic at work. Its really nice but the splice slips around on the caribener messing with the knot a little. I think I prefer a couple of scaffold knots to splices. Im on Yale XTC + and Fire ropes. I manage to get it to self tend, but it wont self tend all the time. I think a lot of getting it to self tend is about good management of the rope that's dangling bellow you and also not stopping on the hitch when you ascend.

I think the wraps do the gripping.

i was under the impression teh wraps gripped and the braids kept the shape of the hitch nad almost buffered the load. What is tenex stuff i had some beeline just its a tad expensive. i've been toying with getting some marine samson stuff, its a technora core with a poly cover but thats a different thread.
