Right fellas faced with abit of a dilema im currently on a land management course in college, and have been for a few months now, its a 2 year course so still in reasonably early days.

the problem is its not quite what i made it out to be, its a very spread out course as it touches on pretty much everything but nothing in great detail. The only bit i am interested in is the forrestry bit which is actually a one day a week nvq part of the course but it can be taken by itself so i can continue with it if i choose to opt out.

Im 19 and looking/hoping to get some sort of tree specialist/surgery apprenticeship where i could do the job i am looking to pursue as a career every day all day ..

whats your thoughts?

thanks

Jazz, Have to pay your dues if you want to sing the Blues and you know it don't come easy. Ring Starr. Do the whole course and remember sooner or later you will use or have a need for the balance of your classes.

I can not expect you to understand at 19 but by the same token you have more than enough time to change your mind and choose another carrer.

All the best

In my opinion do the whole course, i know whats it like to be doing more education thinking i wanna be out working do my dream job. But trust me life may throw some surprises your way and it will help to broaden your knowledge. Learning doesn't stop when u leave, the wider platform u have when u leave makes it alot easier to keep learing when u do leave!

Sorry its bit long winded, but stick with it and i think it will pay you back in time!

See it through Jazz. I quit a NDA half way through when I was your age for the same reasons, now in my mid thirties I'm back at college doing a degree in land management. I'm lucky enough to have a wife that supports me through this so I can finally complete my education and get the job I want.

I know it's a drag as I've been there, and the course I'm on now can be a bit steady but trust me, you will regret it in years to come if you quit now. 2 years isn't that long when you've hopefully got 40 plus years in the workplace! Plus all the bits that you think are a bit irrelevant now will alll be tucked away in your brain and no doubt come in handy one day.

Your a lot more employable and have greater earning potential if you can demonstrate a whole range of skills in your area such as ecology, wildlife and habitat management etc and all the theory that goes with it.

The first year of the course I'm on was pretty dull in places, and is a lot more relevant and interesting this year. If you've got any concerns, speak to your course manager about what other modules you will be doing as they often like to go through the basics in the early part of the course so your up to speed for the fun bits!

True enough, you could quit now and get a sound job and work away with no worries. But it's tough getting a good job at the moment, and the more armed with skills and knowledge, as well as enthusiasm and good work ethics you are the more chance you stand of getting on well.

Stick with it mate, don't end up like me back in the classroom when your older than some of the lecturers!
