Explain very carefully what has happened and in detail about the forged contract.

 

You should do this to ensure, you have covered yourself, and to sort out the situation.

I don't think you've done anything particularly wrong, and I think many of us would have done the same in your situation.

There was afterall still the potential for a job out of this, and there may still be... the neighbours may really appreciate how you handled the situation and recommend you to loads of good future customers.

 

Every situation presents an opportunity, sometimes just to be a good citizen. But keep doing what you're doing.
