i have an old 281 that backfires and loses power i have changed the fuel filter and the plug cleaned the carb out still does im thinking its now ignition related any pointers cheers

spuds the man to ask, but it could be broken flywheel key

 

Mike - you learn fast, classic signs of a loose or broken flywheel key, it could be that the coil to flywheel gap is too great (Unlikely to cause this) or the coil is breaking down but the flywheel key is most likely - first saw that did this on me scared me sh?Xless!

i learn fast but memory is like a sieve with a huge whole in it , ive got a lovely 281,i leave it ticking over for ages....love the sound

i think i have found the problem the wiring on the coils has loose terminations on the ends so i gave them a squeeze to tighten them up tried it and it seems to be better i will need to try it under load to make sure
