What would you do - hung up wind blown content

Put the pull line through top of another strong one, couple of hitches, fell 2-3 foot off the bottom each time whilst groundsman lowers top after each cut (tie in bottom if necessary to stop butt throw). Always works good on dead trees you can't climb.

It didnt fall exactly where I hoped.

 

But no damage done to life nor limb.

 

I'm off to audition for Fred Dibnah's stunt double.

 

My mum took fright and ran off with the video when it fell.

Can you get a photo of the hinge?

 

Looks like it fell at right angles to the intended direction?

It did fall at a right angle to the hinge.

 

I cut the stump down to near ground level, I did preserve the hinge, I will take a picture tomorrow in daylight for a crit. It would be good to know where I went wrong. I was very conscious that the root ball could shift, so at the first sign of movement, I made good my escape, so I don't know what path the tree initially fell in.

 

The tree was near vertical when winched up, if anything it was bending towards the winch. That may have put some extra strees on the cut.

 

This was pretty much a one of, usually I only ever cut stuff that is already on the ground.

Well done - as the old pilots used to say,"any landing you can walk away from is a goodun"

 

At least you brought a large winch, you will sort out 'hinges' - now I slowly walk away when a tree goes "did you like that" but to start it was more 'the RLF technique' (run like ****)

Here is the stump hinge, viewed from what I hoped would be the direction of fall. It in fact fell at a right angle (to the right) of where I planned. I dont know if you guys can read stumps like tea leaves.

 

I can see I failed to keep the saw level and match the mouth cut with the felling cut.

You pretty much cut thru the hinge, leaving a little on the right hand side from what I can tell.
