I finally got around to taking some pics of some elms that I pass regularly in the car...

 

The two below are a huge tree in a back garden - check out the size of the trunk compared to the patio furniture:

nice, i have 2 near me, not quite as tall though but not far off!

i didnt know that their were still elm trees that big left in the UK. are they the asian/oriential elm variety that isnt as suseptable to DED?

As far as I know, the European white elm (Ulmus laevis) is also quite 'resistant' to DED (it's as susceptible to the fungus as the other elms, but the bark beetles don't seem to like it).

ahh ok, so the european elm and the european white elm are very similar in apperance?

I think they're smooth leaved elm - there are a few mature ones around, whether they're resistant strains or just lucky I don't know...

 

There was a line of big mature elms on a nearby farm, which where fine up until this year - unfortunately the whole lot died in the summer.

 

Oddly the three in the picture are surrounded by typical DED infected thicket growth, but they seem to survive, so perhaps they are resistant rather than lucky.

we have felled six very large roadside trees this year in lincoln... council are considering some injection at £500 a tree!

Don't know who Kev is refering to, but the experience, technology & scientific knowledge I witnessed down at Kew recently, appears vfm from my observations.

I have been watching arborjet for a couuple of years now and seen some positive results in the US..... Saw them at the APF, the costs dont amount to anything near £500 per tree so some one is pulling it a bit, try £35-50 per tree
