Cultivar pruning

why would it revert back if left unpruned? is it because if you prune it then it has not had time to revert back to the european beech leaves? and if so surley normal beech leaves would be the most productive structure for the enviroment? or is it to do with somthing else...

because i think the tree has been mainuplated by mans hand so to speak , which is what cultivars are , the natural programming in it will take over if mans hand is absent.yes your right the natural growth pattern is stronger , its only our tinkering that keeps the way it is..im not to sure on excatly why it happens...this is question for Tony.Sorry patchwork, dont know enough on the subject...yet.

what is it called when trees form natural varieties. i remember at merrist wood college all the oak trees looked similar then their was one oak tree that had very spiral like growth on the branches not helical but very erratic. the tree next to it was an oak and didnt show any signs of this growth. it wasnt due to secondary bud growt or any think, my tutor said that it may be a naturally occouring growth pattern, and if i grew an oak tree from one of the acorns it may retain this growth
