Wich way does the piston go?

Help!

I meant, Help please, ofcourse:001_smile:

I've decided to put a new cylinder on an ms180 I'd been given (it ran fine but the exhaust mountings had sheared off). Ordered one from Mr Solutions, got here this morning, all good. I was pleased to see it was a "mahle" kit. They only did a p+c kit so I'm changing the piston as well.

I took the old one off, no problems and made a mental note that the pin goes in from the clutch side, only to find the new piston has both ends equiped with rings!

It does have a little arrow on it, but wich way should it point? Carb or exhaust? I cannot see any difference in it at all but I'd like to be sure.

Gut says exhaust...:confused1:

Oh, I've done everything bar the 8mm nuts that hold the carb on with my new "topsaw" multitool-gadget-thing!

One word of warning, I have known Chinese pistons to be stamped up wrong, a very general rule is the ring pins are generally on the inlet side but have seen that the Stihl 441 is an exception.

Thanks, I've put it on now anyway:biggrin:

When I re-assembled it it made sense to have the rings the way they were. I just looked at it and could not see any difference. A bit like when you're looking for your glasses only to be told they're on your head:biggrin:.

I think the piston would be Mahle as well, seeing as the cylinder was, but I did not see any maker's marks anywhere. The c was clearly marked.

I'm enjoying the fiddling about with it, everything is spotless, checked for wear everywhere, lubed where appropriate etc. I've not done a rebuild like this before and am having great fun:thumbup:
