Honey fungus question

How far has the honey fungus travelled underground once the mushrooms appear on the surface?

 

Also when is the best time to have our stump ground out I hear autumn is not good due to spores?

 

Lastly if I may- Can airbourne honey fungus spores only affect dead trees/woody plants? and living trees can only be affected via the underground rhizomorphs?

1) Thats a bit of a non starter question, Honey rarely fruits therefore fruiting is an unreliable indicator of anything much bar presence and panic fruiting.

 

2) As far as i know there is no asexual (anamorph) non sexual stage of honey so to worry about spore spread is nonsense, the sooner you grind the stump the better. by grinding we expose the stump to a complex of competitors that make life harder for the honey, but it doesnt eradicate the honey which can and will live on.

 

3)Spores can colonise, they just need to land in the right spots in the right conditions, but generaly it colonises by rhizomorphs in the soil
