White rotted roots? Coupled with possible dysfunction in the canopy I'd point to merip. But leaves have usually gone early on merip infected beech.

 

Could be anything.

Couldnt you get sam or russ in and get it shifted to your yard that way? Gonna be a lot of saw dust to clear on that one.

Good thing is JP I don't have to clear up, I'm discing it up on site and splitting then delivering straight to a customer who will season himself, I wish more people would think like this.

The burr type growth in the second pic is pretty awesome, I'm gonna try and get a woodturner to buy that.
