Cleaning stove glass

Damp cloth and wood ash works for me. No chemicals!

I guess a cloth would be better than paper as it doesn't last long. Will try it next time. The wood ash is the key. Fantastic abrasive.

You boys are supposed to be selling the wood, all down to a clean burn, any dryish wood on full burn will burn off any dirty glass.

 

BUT will also depend on what stove and chimney in operation.

I think half the effect with wood ash is that it's alkaline so it actually dissolves the deposits - the stove glass spray cleaner is based on sodium hydroxide as far as I know for the same effect.

Yup! Simple and clever - the wet cloth leaches lye from the wood-ash which turns the glass oily deposits to a soap... must try that!

 

Anyone made an ash barrel to collect lye?

My tip would be not to clean the glass at all - our hunter stove has been in the living room for 19 years now and I don't think its ever had the glass cleaned by any method other than opening the air inlet up and giving it a good blast for 10 minutes.

 

Looks fine to me!

If you burn properly seasoned wood the glass should clear itself

I used to use Stovax glass cleaner good bit corrosive but most of the time it's just hot water and a cloth and rinse well:thumbup1:
