loader mounted knockers are good but prematurely wear bushes and pins. you still really want the mast to be side mounted as you dont wanna be having to shunt for each post, especially if you tow a fencing trailer and/ or wire winder behind. i have used knockers on tractors, bobcats, converted dumpers and excavators upto 25ton, still reckon mog and knocker is most versatile setup

This is what I use..... a protech p3000 (and occassionally a kinghitter). I can work alone very easily, its fully adjustable by hydraulics, i just park the tractor then adjust it all to where i want to be..... rather than in and out the cab just to get the tractor in the right place. Also it means that if the post starts to wander (from hitting something underground etc) then i can 'pull' it back in line with the hydraulics.

Having done a few thousand metres this year on my own, my suggestions for making one would be to use rope/pulleys, make it as adjustable as possible via hydraulics and to have the weight strike a plate (which has a spike to grip post) rather than directly onto the post. and obviously to have the largest striking weight as possible (the photo shows small post just for rabbit fencing, but the driver will happily band in 10" posts that havent even been pointed up!)
