New Tree Planting Standard

A new British Standard for tree planting is being considered by the BSI.

Given the still very patchy quality of urban tree planting I see, I think it may be very timely. I get rather frustrated when I see lovely heavy standard tree being shoved into a tiny hole into made-up ground of the worst quality with the water table already rising below.

Details can be found on the Arboricultural Association's website:

Tree planting and establishment: your views needed on proposed new British Standard. - - Arboricultural Association

How many of you Arbtalkers get involved in urban tree planting?

none unfortunately, keep asking who does all the planting but never get a straight answer

IMO we should do it as work included as well as taking them down or pruning, it is after all Arb!!

I've also seen some shocking planting before now and have, unfortunately, been part of shocking planting before i ever new what i was doing:blush:

things have changed for the better:thumbup:

I agree- I regularly see large commercial landscaping schemes which seemed to managed Ok (trimmed shrub mass, mulched beds, edged grass etc), but then all of the planted trees are in a hell of a state (strangling ties, drought, mechanical damage co-dominant leaders etc etc).

Planting and managing trees is quite specialist and should be done by arbs, but it's probably impractical to let two separate contracts to manage a given site.

From past experience also, working for a landscaping company, when we used to do the big planting jobs at schools and colleges we used to get speaking to the architects/designers of the planting scheme about why they had placed the trees on the plan where they had. Not ONE had a decent answer, most said because it looked nice! No forethought to right species, right place our nothing... And then the substrate it went into... Well thats another story:sneaky2:

Another B.S update to argue over !!! The standards are for the general public to ensure they are getting quality work. The issue you guys are talking about is quality monitoring.

The problem is that clients want a cheap job and are willing to accept poor quality planting to meet their targets of numbers in the ground over the budget. As with all highway work quality is always compromised by price!!!!!

Why not take the time to educate the client then and push the BS in front of them? After all its in their interest not to waste thousands planting trees which subsequently die from avoidable issues.
