Walnut

HEY-UP Everyone. Had to go to a good customer this weekend her walnut tree had started to worry her, quote 'the bottom branch seemed a little low'.

When I arrived and saw it the branch had a crack in it about about a third of the way from the trunk. I went back Sunday to remove the branch. Having removed the said object and logging it there was no weight to it. From the trunk the centre was dark brown when cutting the stub off the tree it was soft abut halfway through.

Having had little to do with walnuts although the area where this was has a vast amount of these. Can any one cast a light on the problem.

Looks rather ominous, I must say. The second picture clearly shows splits in the wood under the bark. That first branch may just be the start of it.

 

I didn't know South Yorkshire had 'vast amounts' of walnut.

Just north east of Doncaster this area seems to have all the Walnuts.

Anyway two Walnuts in South Yorks in vast amount. Had a word with TPO man. He is going to look at it He says they have had a couple of Walnuts suddenly die. The customer would like to keep it but is now a little afraid of the tree falling on the house.

She would plant a mature specimen in its place.

PS. there is no TPO on the tree the area is a conservation area!!!

If it's in a Conservation area then the LA will have the option of putting one on when you apply to do any work. Walnuts always seem very susceptible to honey fungus.
