Laptop touchpad driving me nuts - can't deactivate it via control panel - help!

I had an old lap top and when I put a mouse in, the touch pad still worked anoying, I just stuck a peice of ice cream tub plastic over the top, with some tape, that worked and used my mouse.

I had this on my old laptop and it drove me crazy.

 

But found a programme in the end Synaptics Pointing Device Driver Software Informer: Latest version download, news and info about this Synaptics program. Improves your laptops mouse pad functionalities and allows you to customize it. I think it was here (couple of years ago) where you can turn the dam thing off!

Ancient Dell Inspiron 6000! Using mouse but does not auto the tpad off! When typing, v easy to brush pad and up typing in the middle of other text - flippin hate it.
