Of course it would be easier if we just called ourselves wood processors and supplied green logs. Alot cheaper for everyone and no double handling. The customer would need to buy a year in advance like the do in most of europe.

As a consumer rather than a provider I have no problem with this and if the price is right I'm perfectly happy to buy green wood. I'm also happy to cut it into rounds and chop it myself, In fact I enjoy the work, but I accept that I'm the exception here.

We have (just) enough space to season wood and I've been processing wood for my own fire since I was old enough to swing an axe. Most people I fear have neither the space nor the common sense to store fuel for future use.

I suspect that you can easily tell who has had a fire for many years and who has recently bought a woodburner with no previous experience!

The lack of customer fuel awareness can be laid at the door of poor stove sellers who driven by low margins caused by the web cannot afford to spend time educting people about the stove they have just bought let alone what goes into it.

We do though expect instant results from something we have bought, buying green and storing I doubt will really catch on here. Having said that a lot of people in this area were sold green last winter as being readyto burn.

So when they burn that wood this year they will realise how good it was really and that they need to buy next years supply now. Next lesson will be no its not half price because its green. The cost of firewood is higher than ever but the margins are smaller than ever. We sell 2cu metres for £160 which I make £30 for 3 hrs work. I only do this when I have a quiet period I have been busy so not much firewood this year. I deliver to mansions and large multimillion pound properties in sleet and snow and get moaned at about the cost I doubt these people have invested £30,000 to earn £10 an hour which is why it is difficult to get quality firewood.
