after a little advice please. is it possible to quieten down a chainsaw simply, does anyone have any tried and tested methods. all answers welcome, even the comedians who will tell me to leave it in the stop position or run it without the petrol in!

cheers for the help.

No doubt making the exhaust port smaller and/or adding extra baffles will certainly quieten it. Wont do the power any favours or engine life.

I suppose a custom exhaust would be the best bet but not cheap I would imagine!

Sorry cant be of any direct help, will be interesting to see if its been tried though.

We were discussing the virtues of hydraulic saws the other week, soooo quiet!

how do you get on with the hoses up the tree?:sneaky2:

mesterh, i was having similar thoughts, one cheap and cheerful idea was to pack some wire wool or the like into the muffler. dont know if the wire wool would ignite under those temperatures though.

its a cheap saw (dont all point and laugh, its not mine) and it sounds really throaty like it probably hasnt even got baffles. not being mine i dont want to do anything detrementel to it and certainly dont want to waste money customising it.

Quiet chainsaw - thats a bit gay - just been using my muffler modded 345 today - I love the sound, woke a few people up I am sure:thumbup:

You would probably need a much bigger muffler with added baffles and larger volumetric capacity - it would kill the power though.

What is the reason?

You could try fiberglass, ie loft insulation.

Its used, or was used in the exhaust of motorbikes, it muffles the sound but wont ignite.

I think just stuffing it in the exhaust might kill the engine though!

if i can get it quiter then i wont have to wear my ear muffs, they really clash with my leather trousers and studded braces:001_tt2:

its used at my father inlaws and hes a little concerned at the noise it makes, it is a bit loud for the size saw it is. its got quite a large port which probably doesnt help, it would probably cope with a cut in power alrite but whatever i do to it will have to be run by my brother in law as its his saw.

could be worth a try, if it kills the engine i'll tell him to buy a real saw next time. to be fair its only used to cut the occasional few logs so it shouldnt stress the engine too much.
