David,

Unless it was an escape from a terrarium, it can not have been a grub of Dynastes Hercules, because it is not an indigenous European species. Probably it was the grub of the European Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes nasicornis), which is mainly found in the Mediterranian region.

And did you ever find the caterpillar of the Goat Moth (Cossus cossus) ? They can be more then 10 centimetres long and if held, bite and spray acid in the wound. I once had an escape of a full grown grub in the boot of my car, I could not retrieve, until I found it inside a rubber rain boot, of which he already had "consumed" a patch of more then 5 centimetres in a weeks time.

Yea i know its not a european species and thats why i was so amazed to have found it. I spoke to a few people over there in Rome and a few others of this species had been found there. If its not Hercules then its extremely similar, and i also studied it quite a bit because i was so amazed at the size of it. I am still convinced that its Hercules more probably because i want it to be :001_tt2::lol:

Here is another one i found lots of and they got me lots of work as well... this it the red palm weevil or punteruolo rosso in Italian. Ummm i guess i should have looked up its scientific name before starting this :blushing:

Anyway this little beauty is responsible for killing a hell of a lot of palm trees in Rome and Italy as a whole and is spreading quickly. They eat the heart of the palm and kill the tree within a few months, then i get the palm bike on:thumbup1:
