Wall slowly falling over - trees part in it?

Recommended Posts

Pictured is a slate wall that is on a good lean outwards from the ground inside (right of picture). Parts of the wall are failing, possibly exacerbated by the last winter but nonetheless needing rebuilt. Behind the wall is ground that was disturbed in the last few years by new-builds but directly behind the area where the wall is breraking-out are some recently topped approx 50 y/o cypress. Any thoughts on what proportion these now rotund trees on a full fat diet are going to have on this wall? Long term = obviously remove but not a structural engineer and don't want to jump to assumptions based on the usual zone of root influence thinking...

Depending on how close the trees are to the wall and shallow or invasive the root system is could be your next course of action. Based on your one picture and details, I would explain to the client that the trees over time have contributed to the leaning of the wall and that in the short term it best to remove wall first, and than the trees. Replant with something less invasive and suggest a nice hedge in place of a slate wall for the future. The wall is a public safety issue in my opinion and the trees in time will continue to be an problem. Of course pull all of the needed permits and make sure everything is in writing. If you need a deposit down for this job, by all means secure one. This looks like a fairly good size project. All the best.
