Pistons - fried like an egg!

I have commented a few times on the importance of fuel/oil mix, not using old mix, pressure checking the engine and carb adjustment - here is a collection of pistons from saws whose owners didn't share my views thought it may be of interest: -

put them in a lathe and turn them down to the next size thats what i would do mate they would be all shinny then

i got a pot for u to look at but i think u may say its ********* mate

u had any thing to do with the big bore piston kits of a 046 (just thinking at the moment

i have a 460 too and it looks a bit like that, a bore out and bigger piston sounds cool, be very interested in a price for it including fitting. Ed

Any big bore kit has to be purchased complete - the original bores on saws built mid 70s onwards have plated bores with Chrome being on the older saws and Nikasil on the newer ones - only cast iron liners can be bored out.

 

Some of the US guys do big bore kits - Baileys are one of the companys but they charge $$$$$ for delivery to the UK!

 

Cost of fitting a P&C kit (customer supplied) - around £75 and will include a pressure check and tach tune to the carb.

Unfortunately it's not that simple (or it's much simpler, depending on which way you look at it!). The pot is a magnesium alloy, lined with a thin Nicasil plating layer. Once the plating's gone, the pot is shot. Consequently you can't bore them out - big bore kit is a full kit.

weld them up with a conrod, mount on a turned lump of wood and ebay them as piston cups. maybe even get an engraver to personalise them for customers?

ok guys, the saw gets what the saw needs, i'd be happy with the stock items fitting either, is it worth getting done soon or waiting for the problem to show itself with poor running? it runs sweet at the mo. Ed
