Got round to looking at my insect book and the velvet mite was the closest I could get to identifying it. Alos you picture looked pretty much like it. Cheers Hamadryad

The only reason I even got that image was going onto WAB (wild about britain) if your ever wanting much more qualified opinions on these matters, in fact wild flowers, bugs, birds even reptiles thats the place, fungi too.

 

Im just an ameteur, but many of the Wab crew are truly experts in thier fields.

 

you mentioned markings on its back, the mite has none, thats my only glitch about it from your description, colour felty apperance etc size was good though?
