I just bought a spencer model from Clarks. Looks to be identical to the stihl yet substantially cheaper. IMO it may be open letting some dirt in, but it also means it lets the dirt out. Any dirt ingress into the husky or oregon tapes and it's pretty much in there to stay and wreak havok! the availability of new tape inserts, springs, ends etc with the spencer was also a bonus

The Spencer/Stihl tapes are good but spruce sap plays hell with the rewind mechs. I took the last one apart after the tape had broken again and the spring was also worn out.

 

I find if walking a lot on rough ground (horse logging) the side wears on the tongs case:001_rolleyes:
