Dodgy Oak limb

Last week on one of my site rounds i spotted a split in a sizeable limb (2ft approx at butt). We had our own council contractors come and deal with it this week. When the limb was being reduced to a managable size the tree surgeon was a tad nervous as it made a loud crack from the butt. He decided to drop it in two sections (Crown and trunk). Ive attached images of said limb with crack clearly visible.

Not before time, by the looks of it.

Sorry, was the branch just reduced or the whole tree?

If just the branch then I might of tried to have left a fractured stub of a couple of feet, particularly with that crack in it.

Would have possibly (based on the photo) made the target area safe & maintained what could of become a fine piece of habitat.

The branch was reduced and we left a about an 18 inch stub near the trunk for habitat. The crack didnt decend too far into the beam (only 6 inches or so) so we decided to cut it back to a point where it wont look silly but at the same time will become a habitat for lil critters in years to come.

Here is a better pic of the cut end. We had some rain overnight which washed out the crack of the detritus that had built up.

Have to agree with David.....think i'd have made a nice rip cut/coronet combo.....made it safe, created habitat and natural looking.....only a thought for the future?:001_smile:
