could be a honey colonisation of the dysfunctional column associated with the pruning wounds. The rhizomorphs pushing off the outer bark, OR it could have been the fencing contractors truck!

Ive seen it in cornwall, kent, and herts and bucks county so pretty wide, northern yet to find out.

Gerrit, as promised been checking out a few sites today, check these out!

 

whats interesting here is that I. hispidus has caused limb failures here, I went to this tree to shoot it for hispidus, and instead found our little beastie auricularia!

 

which proves its a cambium coloniser as the hispidus would occupy the core of the volumes that the Auricularia is on here. This fungi may well be responsible for a lot of "complications" in various decays.
