whats this on evergreen trees?

i've got a cliant with several trees with this bark damage/growth. it seams to form a ring around the tree, either the main trunk or branches or both. there is one that has already broken at one of these rings.

thankyou hama. i thought canker but wasn't sure as there didnt seam to be any sign of anys other organism in the wounds. they do weep sap though.

the hole in the ring in the first pic is about the size of a fist and the wood inside is a little soft.

it started with a buckle, canker got in and bacterial/fungal after maybe, all these things are succsessional, something always follows another, downward spirals always have a begining and an end. Its just a matter of piecing it together.

I have just spent the day pruning out nectarina canker from apple trees, which to me looks like what is in these trees in pics one and two. However are these on softwood trees, if they are, then i am fairly sure that nectarina canker does not effect them. So back to the drawing board i am afraid.

Im going to go and check my S... but are you trying to tell me its impossible to have a canker on softwood?

There are many cankers of spruce,pine Ive a headache right now so aint going to get all hienz butin suffice to say i have checked my S... in his book, and as I thought my view is correct, this IS buckling and canker.

 

I bid this farewell, unless we HAVE to get all reference material on it, in which case be back tommorow.

Breton, this is quiet signficant, would you mind me sending these to a rather eminent tree mechanics expert? could you mail me what you have of this?

 

i think this one needs further discussion, for reasons that might not be obvious to some but well worth discussing with a bit more details. Cankers arent exactly high on the "risk" agenda.

 

Would you also consider sending a slice to forest research?

I said that i had spent the day pruning nectria out of an orchard, and thats what it looked like it to me. Softwood are prown to as many different cankers as hardwoods, but Nectria galligena does not effect softwoods.
