Can I borrow......

I've never ran a car on additives. There seems to be as ever varying opinions, but the ally heads are fitted with iron seats so may be ok without either. I've done about 60k in my 3.5 nearly all on gas ( which has even less lubricating properties) and I've never had problems except for the rings. So unless your doing big mileage etc I wouldn't bother

your two engines are under very different conditions, yours is poodling along the road, the hotrod engine is being revved harder, producing more power, running higher compression / ignition advance etc etc!! i would run a good additive in a race engine!!!

lol!! i was surprised that your engine had gone through a set of rings at that mileage, excessive ring/bore wear is normally attributed to wrong or poor quality engine oil, im by no means having a dig but did you keep the engine well serviced?? ring wear is common if an older derv engine oil has been used in a petrol engine, i think something to do with the detergants they add???? im sure someone will be along with a better explanation!!!

Thanks Folks, bought a glaze buster from evilbay and borrowed a compressor and will get the engine chemically cleaned local. (dishwasher for heads as it did the carb okay!)

Why is it best to run it with an additive instead of converting it?

i'd only use the millers VSP (valve seat protection?) stuff, made all my old motors go pretty quick, and without changing the valve seats. it puts the lead (and more) in ya pencil:thumbup: if you contact millersoils.com they can advise you if it'll work and show you the data on how fast valve seats wear (on your head type) without protection on unleaded, did i mention their stuff is an octane booster too?

I have a 1939 singer, ( not the seeing machine) and as for running unleaded I did blow a head gasket last year, while I was at the rebuild I decided to fit thicker gaskets and always run a good adative wether lashing it at muddy hills in the first or running it on the road.

The engine does feel more responsive than in the past but certainly don't want to do the gasket in again so deffo worth keeping an eye on the compression when it is done and of course the oil pressure even tho mine does go up and down the guage like a yoyo.

Anyhow best of luck with ur project and hope this helps
