none of our tractors are forestry guarded and dont think they ever will be, although we did smash 2 of the windows on the case in the last month or so, so would have been helpfull, but dont think they will be replaced as it will only happen again

It's worth doing. I was out forwarding two weeks ago on a nice sunny day just after all the gales we had here. A Chestnut about 18" blew over. It looked fine it must have been damaged but sat back and looked fine. A little gust brought it over. Hit the guarding on the tractor bounced off and hit the timber trailer. If it wasn't for the cage it would have been a lot more than £8 worth of damage. As the ROPS on the tractor would have been damaged so a new cab wouldn't of been cheap.

Its worth looking at the AFAG guide on tractors in tree work.

Nothing wrong with the tractor or trailer. Only reason the trailer is for sale is that its very old and it gets a lot of use so an upgrade is needed. You can't roof mount on the A series which is why i'm thinking of another. I wouldn't sell that tractor for the world.

i've read most of the afag guides for college work and i realise that guarding is highly recomended, but in the real world, for small scale contractors the cost and time of installing it is not always possible.

i am toying with the idea of just putting some mesh guards on the windows of my leyland, but time and money is against me at the moment

Thanks for all the help and sorry I posted it on the employment forum. Me and my girlfriends dad has decided a to go get a valtra T182 that's 4 yr old and keep my John Deere good as they ain't the cheapest tractor to buy. Got a price from a local business to kit it out for £3000 if I take 20 trees away for them to extend there workshops. Thanks again everyone.
