Husky 353 died!

Chances are that if you used a good fuel oil mix, that the saw wasn't tuned correctly or had an air leak, if you can get it over to me from Ireland, I can sort it out, probably salvage the cylinder, fit a new piston, pressure check it, tach tune the carb and compression check it then send it back.

Just purchased a 345 Husky from Northern Ireland, postage was £16.50 or parcels2go do cheap courier service.

A dealer will slap on a new OEM cylinder and piston and charge you £350 for it, if you are interested we may be able to get it sorted and for much less.

Just finishing off a 262 Husky from another menber on this site - new piston, ported, muffler mod and set up, it really rips now:-)

The 353 is too good to scrap, other option is to put it on ebay as a non runner - probably get good money for it.

PM me if you want help.

Thanks for that Spud but i am really on a budget so it looks like i will be going for one of those kits from ebay. I had the piston out and it is classic heat siezure.

Would like to try and do a muffler mod but not sure how as looking at the exit of the muffler and it seems to be a tube that goes in so how would i open that up?

Would anyone know what other dog spikes would fit as there are none with my saw?

346 spikes will fit. You may also want to consider the 346 p&c as you will gain better performance over the 353 p&c. As for the MM, rather than open the stock port, add a second one. If you're not into welding then drill a hole into the front of the muffler then tune the carb accordingly. If you want an easy way to do it then buy a husqvarna 288 deflector and use two self tapping screws to fix it around the hole. Alternatively you could drill the hole through the muffler and the bracket that holds it in place and fit a spark arrestor screen. Not only does it catch any unlikely sparks it will also stop any unwanted rubbish getting into the muffler and cylinder. Is your 353 a straight 353 or does it have the catalyst? i.e. green fuel cap?

The muffler seems similar to the one I have just done on a Husqvarna 262 - I call it the double barrel shotgun - vid on you tube to come shortly - did it for a member on this site - used silver solder to braze it - a mixture of brass and silver - means you can use a butane lamp to braze!

Hmm, think i will stick with the ebay jobbie then. £58 fingers crossed i cant go wrong!

I did another exhaust port like your shotgun one except the 2nd is o the opposite side, I presume i should richen it up a bit?

Doing a mod like this should produce the need for a richer mix but the last two I did needed the H setting backing off. If you can, get the machine tach tuned but if you can't do this then read all you can about "four stroking" of chainsaw engines at maximum revs. I can tune by ear but am usually 500 - 1000rpm down on maximum revs.

I think that the open muffler is allowing the exhaust out easier and is allowing fuel in to the cylinder much easier hence the need for a less rich mix at the top end - start with factory settings and see what it does at maximum revs then adjust as is needed.

Try to understand the reason for the original seizure - this range of saws has the plastic clip type of carb boot - this has given me some problems with air leaks in the past so now I seal with a little gasket sealent, cut off the clip part of the plastic ring and use a jubilee clip to seal the boot - this works for me.
