not so much... who told you that? ethanol shouldnt damage mag at all, it'll clean oil off it nicely tho

theres a anti corosion paint you can buy (cant remember thr name though)paint the saw inside from new and clean regular and youll get longer life.

certain saws seem to have better alloys.i have a 7 year old 338 husky with very little corosion,and a stihl 361 and 441 both about 2 years old where the side covers have been eaten out.and a 4 year old husky 395 that has consumed 2 oil pump housings so far
