Hi Rob! If you just put spray on the plastics then all that will happen is that who ever nicks it will just change them :sneaky2: or brake it for spares. I was silly enough to ask a police man if I could do a similar thing, his advice was to just make sure that I was insured :001_rolleyes:. I skipped the idea and put more thought into stopping them from getting nicked buy keeping them locked up, or out of sight of prying eyes. Are you sure your not doing this purely because you want your saw to match your boots

In that sense it is probably a good Idea , and something I should do. :001_smile:

The green paint just makes them easily spotted as your saws on site . The police reckon that if the saws got stolen the engraving probably would only help if the saws where recovered . One of my fellow tree surgeons use something called micro dot which is aimed at motorcycle theft . ?

Painting them will kill the re-sale value - just grind in your post code in to the crankcase and rear handle - seen this a few times and is a good way of ensuring security.

Hi Spud! you've said you've seen post codes on saws but what good does it do unless plod is contacted and asked if someone with that post code has had a saw stolen in the last x amount of years ? low stress and all that!:001_smile: but I thought you were a good person to ask as I know that you recondition second hand saws :thumbup1:. How does anybody including yourself check the legitimate ownership of a saw ?

I've been having ideas run through my head again. With all this kit getting stolen left right and centre. Whats the feasability of painting saws in different colours to make them different to others. I was thinking of re colouring the orange panels on a couple of saws that I take out a lot.

Thoughts please!

Anyone tried smart water yet? I've no experience of it yet but I might enquire of the cost and see if there is enough to do all our kit. Having been badly robbed last year it's made me think.

It is a good point and no offence taken, I sometimes pick up locally and many of my saws have come from guys running their own businesses and are obviously in the trade, some are ex local authority as they have cc (commodity codes) on them + ID, some are from garden machine repair businesses and some are just unmarked. I usually buy from ebay in good faith and have never taken them from unknown "traders"......or shall we say, dodgy dudes who contact me unsolicited.

To be honest, I havent the time or energy to trace back the post code to the original owner that may be many years in the past as some of the saws are 1980s/90s and ask the question. I would hope the kit on ebay is bonafide as broadcasting it to the world is pretty stupid thing to do if it is hot.

Many of the saws I buy are also non runners so again are probably picked up as non runners with optimism that ends up with a right arm workout and frustration - you need a bit more than hope to get saws running!

If at any time someone believes my kit to be their stolen saw then I am more than happy to prove the fact and sort it out legally. I don't have much 2-4 year old kit but prefer the 5-20 year old kit, just where my hobby has ended and in reality - I don't need the cash it brings in but it pays for a couple of holidays a year without dipping in to the cash reserves!

Again - no offence taken, just want everyone to know that I don't live in a caravan here in North Herts, am not strapped for the cash and am honest as the day is long.

I think the micro dot idea is a good idea and you can use "smart water" as another option. A painted saw could be cleaned with nitromours paint remover or a solvent soak, something someone woul do on a £600 saw.
