Yea it builds up a strong vacuum with fuel in the tank.

Can anyone suggest away of pressure testing the fuel tank without buying expensive test kit, I assume emptying the tank and sucking on the filler hole will tell me if the tank vent is blocked?

That tells you there is a problem with the vent.

Dunno where it is but it sounds blocked/faulty.

If vent is shut it will start and run until it can't pump fuel anymore and die.

There should be a positive pressure in tank, never negative.

Of with cap so it gets neutral or Atmosphere pressure. Back in with it and it should start.

There are tank vent in some form on all saws.

I have an old 266XP and noted the fuel vents on the righthand side, it bubbled when working on the saw - take a look on exploded diagrams of your saw, it should balance pressure both for using fuel vacuum and for heat increasing pressure. On the oil side is a granulated bronze bush.

Hope this helps
