What would have caused this?

I am looking at buying an ex tow truck,it has had the head replaced after just 37000km!This seems most unusual to me.

I first suspected that the engine may have been overheated and the head had warped or cracked.

What else may have caused this?

Probably has overheated, faulty water pump, holed rad or pipe, etc.

Or could have been a bad casting with the head.

One of my mates found a new transit with 3 head gaskets on! musta been a fault at the factory since it hadnt been touched from new.

What engine is it?

Its a Diesel in a Toyota Landcruiser,I'm not sure if its the four cylinder 3A,3B etc or the later fiver cylinder.I have heard that the latter engine suffered from poor cylinder heads.

I dont know much about those engines tbh but i think they have an aluminium head which if they do can easily warp/ crack etc.

If the job has been sorted properly and the problem fixed that caused the warp/crack then i dont see a reason not to buy since toymota have a a very good reliability record :001_smile:

Well untill someone else posts something different :001_tongue:

I would think it has been over heated, check the obvious part like Rad, hoses, water pump etc and see if there are signs they have been replaced also.

If they have then there lies the problem.

At the end of the day it depends on how cheap it is, if its the right price and compression is showing ok, and the is no water in then oil then you should have no problems.

Ask the seller if all else fails.
