when you have as much ganoderma as i have the old fruiting bodies go as black as coal break it open and it is brown inside. like you i have lots of books but best way to learn is to have a lot of types on your trees.my best one is grifola frondosa on some of my old oaks.:001_smile:

Qoute from rebbecca:Hi Generally if the underside of the ganoderma is dark it is no longer alive. As a previous answer said you will probably get some fresh ones growing, however if you get no more then the ganoderma has in fact been compartmentalised and has run out of suitable feeding material.

EUREKA! Thats intersting..thanks bundle.

will have to see if i can go back to the site and see if there are anymore growing on the beech.

It certainly looks like it might be ...I am interested to see it so gloss black...something I thought might be a attributable to age....but the " wobbly " stacked appearance is familiar to me...which is different to fomes fomentarius which tends to be more evenly stacked ime...( ? )

BTW....Phellinus igniarius goes by the common name amongst others of " White trunk rot " The crown will appear healthy to all intents and purposes but dont be mislead by this...it is no indication as to the true condition of the wood!!!!:scared1:
