Mad ? maybe :sneaky2:

I appreciate the benefits of Ivy on certain trees and leave it for the cover it offers to bats, insects and birds to name just a few it also provides cover for nesting and over wintering in areas that lack evergreen trees.

Veteran trees with open canopies can offer to much light and the ivy can sometimes out grow the host, if I find a tree like this then I sometimes seather half the stems and leave the other half which also helps prevent sun scorch.

Another bonus of Ivy is the source of food it offers to the insects that live in it and the animals that feed on them, the flowers also contribute largly to bees diet.

There are 2 sites on the same main road where salt from gritting the road killed the conifer hedges but in both cases the owners wanted to retain the cover so the Ivy has been allowed to grow and is now trimmed and shaped over the old stumps, and seems to be doing a better job of suppresing the noise and collecting the air born pollution from the busy traffic.

Ok but how do you justify it when it swamps a tree and the tree then dies?

I wouldnt have to justify that scenario as I wouldnt allow it to swamp a tree, so the tree wouldnt die :thumbup1: management is the key, work with things rather than removing them as they all serve a purpose in lifes rich pattern :thumbup1:

I do actually agree with all your points Pat.

Sadly, many trees don't get managed properly and in my area there are many thousands of large trees almost entirely swamped with Ivy, soon to die.
