I have got my CS38 and am getting my climbing kit together, and was wondering what exactly is the difference between twisted and straight steel spikes.

One is twisted, one is straight?????

Seriously, If you look down the shank (the long bit that runs up the leg) you will notice a twist in the metalwork, this means they are L and R specific due to the direction of turn. Straight shanks are just straight up and down.

If you already have your 38 ticket, the instructor should have explained this. If you are still to go on the course, the instructor should(?) be able to provide spikes?

I have got my ticket, but there was no discussion of twisted or straight spikes on the course. I borrowed spikes off the instructor for the course and they were straight but we simply covered the use of them not the variations in type which for someone new to climbing are slightly confusing.

I've been doing quite alot of dismantling on my straight shank spikes and have also borrowed my mates twisted shank spikes and mine are loads more comfortable:thumbup:. My calf's killed after borrowing my mate twisted one's:thumbdown:
