beech tree propblem

Afraid no photos, has anyone come across a condition in beech trees, from young to old, pruned and unpruned. Branches have longitudinal splits along the topside of the branches, callous wood forms but seems to peel back, so when viewed from below, it appears the bark has been peeled back along its length. May only be a narrow split, in others may be more open. It has me scratching for inspiration.

 

Looked at two trees yesterday, condemned as diseased to be removed but dunno what it is. Strouts & Winter not helping, neither body language of trees, or Watson or Harris.
