3dogs- I tried twice putting a piece of rope through the spark plug hole to block the piston. On both occasions it got cut inside as I turned the clutch and I had to take the piston out to find the missing end of the rope.

You pushed it in too far and it got severed by one of the ports

What do you mean by piston stop? Can I just put a thick metal bar through the plug hole?
Gawd no, the piston and pot are soooooft alloy, steel will ruin them

On the clutch there are arrows pointing clockwise with OFF on it. I take it this is the direction I have to turn the clutch to turn it off?

Yup

If you don't have an operators handbook you can download one from the husqvarna website. There are 4 manuals for the 395 make sure you choose the right one for the age of your saw. There is a section on how to adjust your chain oil pump for different lenght bars.

It doesn't sound like enough oil especially if you are running a longer bar , but the viscosity of your chain oil will influence how much is actually pumped and in this cold weather the oil will be thicker than normal.
