Hey guys,

I am currently in my 3rd year of studying Geography with Environmental Studies at Southampton Solent University.

For my dissertation project I am proposing the use of a Smartphone application; Epicollect, to map the distribution and spread of Sudden Oak Death.

This Poster/ Brochure explains how Data collection would work

As most of you are aware Sudden Oak Death; caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, is already causing widespread damage to trees within the UK and the situation is bound to get worse.

It would be interesting to know if anyone on here has come across had experiences with the disease and/or information on areas that they work in which are close to areas affected by the disease.

If anyone here has an Android Device/iPhone and spots a suspected case of Sudden Oak Death, It would be greatly appriecated if they could take their time to download the application, answer the short questionnaire along with their GPS location + Photo and then Syncronise their data entry to the main website.

Thanks and again I am very keen to hear of peoples experiences with the disease

think i may have worked on a mature oak last friday that has this. The bark on one side was very black, in patches, not isolated spots but large areas a very dark colour on the side of the tree which had the failure, all the way to the upper crown. The tear out also had bright purple spots dotted about. Didn't take many pics but got a couple, and a screen shot off my phone showing location. Sorry I haven't done much of the stuff in the brochure but hope it helps.

Hey thanks so much for your effort but the Pathogen dosen't actually affect UK Oak Trees.

The Pathogen got its name from affected four types of oak tree in the USA.

It the UK the main species affected Incdlue Japanese Larch, Rhoderdendrum and Vibrumum plants

Sorry for the confusion but thanks again for taking the effort :001_smile:
