Thanks for the great advice all, really useful. Will defo look into the 38/39 and look into getting some experience. Good to hear there are more women in the profession than I thought! I've got my own PPE and looking at saws for when I've got a bit of money, so good to know that will help too.

Was browsing the forum and read that the RFS arb cert may be withdrawn as a distance learning course? Anyone know anything more on this?

Many thanks :001_smile:

I don't want to sound like an old cynic but I have never had the opportunity to work with a woman in this line of work. I think the biggest obstacle you might come across is having to 'prove yourself' to us burly men 'grunt, grunt'! You sound capable of doing the job better than some of the guys I have worked beside.

Get experience, join a large company if you can, like BTS, they are in North Lincs, I think or even Bartletts dare I say it. Mind you the closest office is near Wetherby. (Its closer to Wetherby than York)!

I was lucky enough to get a job because I had C1+E on my licence, held my chainsaw certs and experience. After 3 years I now have CS38 and CS39 and I am in the position of Plant Health Care Tech for the office. I am an experienced groundsman and do a bit of climbing but to be honest it has been a hard slog. Work at it, and you will really enjoy the job, it becomes more than a job! Best of luck.

Hi J

As a female in the forestry industry moving into arb at the grand old age of 40!!! the advice you have had so far is sound. Through the years i have worked with great blokes and my gender was never an issue. Be prepared for the inevitable dinosaur brains you will encounter and just remember that it is their loss. You may have to work a wee bit harder initially (physically) but you are young and fit and you are coming into the best industry in the world for meeting really genuine people. Best of luck and go for your cs38 & 39 first everything else can wait.
