When you say 'the pale version' tony what are the differences?

Im still working out the differences between the two "possible forms"

One appears very large, almost white underside slightly more foilace at the edges and without that thick rubbery orange appearance or dark banding above. its hard to put into words, check out the meripilus threads most recent posts. there you will see what i think are the two forms. though obviously, they may appear on the same tree, as with Ganoderma australe and applanatum.

So far ive only witnessed the larger paler form in close proximity to the main stems (sapro on old tap root) with the darker version on the outer root plate and also on all the merip failures ive recorded thus far in whip and ashridge.

Conventional wisdom would say fell.

More recent research would suggest a more measured approach.

It depends on the targets, how much the client wants to keep the tree, and how much they are willing to spend to find out whether it is possible to keep it.

In the long term, the cheapest option is to fell the tree immediately.
